HELEN LONDON SILVERSMITH AND JEWELLER

Helen London designs and makes bespoke, high quality silverware and jewellery.
Most pieces are made in sterling or fine silver and gold items are made to commission.
All of her work is handcrafted from her workshop based in Tewkesbury. She studied at the
London Guildhall University and later at the Bishopsland Educational Trust in South Oxfordshire.
Central to Helen's work is a great love for making - manipulating silver,
perfecting techniques and solving technical challenges. She has a hands on approach and admires
all forms of great craftsmanship, from contemporary design through to beautiful museum artefacts.
A connection with the past and the historic background of craft is evident in Helen's use of
the traditional technnique of filigree. This uses fine twisted wires set in a frame to create
intricate pieces that adorn and decorate their wearer. Helen utilises this technique and
incorporates it into sleek contemporary designs. The simplicity of shapes created and the bold use of line and pattern magically
transforms an ancient craft in to an elegant work of art in the 21st century.

The same principals apply to Helen's unique silverware. She enjoys the
opportunity it affords her to expand designs and express flowing line and pattern on a larger canvas.
Structure of form and surface design can originate from playful experimentation with three dimensional
models or from the elegant lines and shapes that depict the human body. Helen also loves to create
pieces with movement and mechanism. This delight in technical detail comes from a belief that an
item of silverware should be a much used and cherished belonging. Attachment to a physical object
comes from familiarity and so Helen encourages
this by creating items that beg to be handled, moved and toyed with.

Helen will also work to commission if you have a particular item in mind. From a bespoke design service
to the creation of your specific requirements, Helen is able to make that special piece that you just can't find in the shops.
